Is Miyake an artist first whose art just happens to be wearable or a brilliant designer whose collections can be works of art ? You can answer the question for yourself or just marvel at the man’s creativity in his flagship Tribeca store. The store highlights the Issey Miyake women’s and men’s collections, plus his other brands: Fete, A-POC (A piece of cloth!), HaaT, Pleats Please, and Me. A must for anyone who has ever wondered what the clothes of the future would look like (beyond Star Trek uniforms).
Miyake creates new fabrics and then applies his inimitable cutting and pleating to arrive at clothing having the geometric aspects of Cubism perhaps yet incredibly fluid when the wearer is in motion. His works have been displayed in art exhibitions, and he has collaborated in costume creation for dance – which in one case led to his Pleats Please collection.
